John McCall is Director of the Smart Data Technologies Centre at Robert Gordon University (RGU). He has researched in Computational Intelligence for over twenty-five years making novel contributions to a range of naturally-inspired optimization algorithms, such as Genetic Algorithms, Swarm Intelligence, and Estimation of Distribution Algorithms, and their application to difficult real-world learning and optimisation problems. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in books, international journals and conferences. These have received over 1100 citations and he has an h-index of 20. A full list can be found on Google Scholar.
John and his team at RGU specialise in industrial applications of Computational Intelligence, adding intelligent components to existing commercial software or creating new software tools for optimization and decision support. Application areas include decision support for process control, logistics, operations management, staff rostering and scheduling, predictive modeling, medical treatment optimisation and bio-control.
He has strong industry links and his group attracts substantial industrial research funding. Collaborators include large global corporations in telecommunications and oil and gas as well as small to medium sized enterprises. He is a founding director of Celerum, which provides consultancy and optimisation services and PlanSea, which focuses on optimising marine logistics.
